KP Brehmer
Klaus Peter Brehmer (*1938 in Berlin, †1997 in Hamburg), KP Brehmer for short, is an important representative of European pop art and in his art also made his mark by engaging in cultural politics. In the 1960s, Brehmer experimented withphotomechanical reproduction techniques and combined and reproduced images from advertising and the media. Through unlimited or incorrectly declared editions, proofs and special editions, he tried, like numerous artists at that time, to democratize art and to undermine the conditions of capitalist exploitation. The cardboard standup Das Gefühl zwischen Fingerkuppen (The feeling between fingertips) is a contribution to the silkscreen portfolio Grafik des kapitalistischen Realismus (Graphics of capitalist realism) published in 1967 and at the same time a response to the increasing sexualization of advertising. The image of a smoking woman together with retail packets of seeds satirizes the objectification and marketing of female eroticism.
KP Brehmer’s works were shown at, among others, Hamburger Kunsthalle (2016; 1998); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2009; 2008; 1974); Neues Museum Nuremberg (2008); Kunsthalle Wien (2007); October Salon Belgrade (2006); Fridericianum, Kassel (1998); DAAD Galerie, Berlin (1985); documenta, Kassel (1977; 1972); René Block Gallery, New York (1976); Kunstverein Hamburg (1971).
