Collection, loan program, art education, artist support program

Established in 1970, the Artothek – Neuer Berliner Kunstverein’s lending library for artworks – is the largest of its kind in Germany. It comprises more than 4,000 artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, which may be borrowed by private individuals, public institutions, and private organizations.

Loan conditions

The Artothek loans more than 11,000 items per year. The collection encompasses oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, gouaches, sculptures, collages, drawings, prints, and photographs. Every year, n.b.k. acquires new works of art for the Artothek collection, serving as an important source of support for Berlin-based artists. Outreach efforts aim to ensure that individuals as well as students and other members of institutions are made aware of loan opportunities, while education programs help make artistic concepts accessible to all. Artist Silke Wagner specially designed an easy-to-assemble, sculpturesque display system (

, 1998), where the collection is presented for view and possible loan. The system displays information on the works and offers a place to store them. Changing presentations highlight different themes. With the Artothek and its wider outreach activities, n.b.k. is pursuing the democratic idea of cultural education for all.
