Gülsün Karamustafa
In her work, which encompasses a diverse range of mediums and genres, including painting, film, installation, and performance, Gülsün Karamustafa explores themes of migration, exclusion, state violence, religion, urbanization, feminism, and gender. In this pursuit, she challenges and deconstructs Eurocentric stereotypes and the prevailing iconography of the Western art canon. During the 1980s, Karamustafa turned her attention to the transformation of Istanbul, focusing on historical, sociopolitical, and economic aspects of the city. As internal migration surged, Istanbul underwent rapid expansion to become a megapolis within just a few years. The six unique pieces of this n.b.k. Edition consist of found materials (ready-mades), paired with the artists individual touch. This series of works refers to earlier notable creations by the artist, notably the installation Stoic City (2021) and the video work The City and the Secret Panther Fashion (2007).
Gülsün Karamustafa (*1946 in Ankara, lives and works in Istanbul and Berlin) was awarded the Roswitha Haftmann Prize in 2021 and the Prins Claus Prijs in 2014.
