Gülsün Karamustafa is one of Turkey’s most significant artists, who strongly influenced younger generations of artists – not least because of her fight for democracy and freedom of expression. Since the 1990ies, Karamustafa’s artistic practice is mostly based on profound historical, site-specific and socio-political research, and explores themes of migration, exclusion, state violence, religion, urbanization, feminism, and gender. 

The artist talk will provide insight into Gülsün Karamustafa’s multifaceted oeuvre as well as her project Irreversible Remnants, which is on view until February 24, 2023 as part of the series n.b.k. Billboard.

Gülsün Karamustafa (b. 1946 in Ankara, lives in Istanbul and Berlin) was awarded the prestigious Roswitha Haftmann Prize in 2021; in 2014 she received the Prince Claus Award. Yilmaz Dziewior has been director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne since 2015. From 2009 to 2015 he was director of the Kunsthaus Bregenz (KUB). Before working in Bregenz, he was director of the Kunstverein in Hamburg and also taught as professor of art theory at the academy of fine arts in Hamburg (HFBK). He was curator of the German pavilion for the 2022 Venice Biennale, and curated the Austrian pavilion for the 2015 Venice Biennale. Dziewior has also been a regular contributor to Artforum, Camera Austria, and Texte zur Kunst. He has edited numerous books, including exhibition catalogues, on twentieth- and twenty-first-century art.
