René Block, Drei Hubwagen und ein Blatt Papier

In 1964, René Block opened his gallery in West Berlin, showcasing artists who were revitalizing traditional graphic art by incorporating social, political, and economic perspectives. The first exhibition Neodada, Pop, Decollage, Kapitalistischer Realismus has become legendary, several exhibitions on Fluxus soon followed. In 1966, Edition Block was founded, which offered Fluxus objects and which continues to produce and distribute edition art today. Over the past six decades, Edition Block’s artistic reach has continuously evolved and expanded, as have the mediums it works with, embracing not only prints and multiples but also records, videos, books, CDs, and more. Taken as a whole, the Edition Block collection reflects the art history of postwar modernism.

In honor of René Block’s 80th birthday, Neues Museum Nürnberg is hosting a retrospective of his multiple editions, titled Drei Hubwagen und ein Blatt Papier (Three Pallet Jacks and a Sheet of Paper). This exhibition will be presented across three museums in the Lower Rhein region, in Goch, Kleve, and Moyland in 2024. This accompanying publication serves as a comprehensive catalogue, listing and annotating all of the editions produced by Edition Block for the first time.

In 2015, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) presented the exhibition Ich kenne kein Weekend. Archive and Collection René Block, which presented the manifold and interdisciplinary work of the gallery owner and exhibition organizer. n.b.k. is now offering Drei Hubwagen und ein Blatt Papier as well as two special editions of this catalogue containing both original prints from the Edition's archive and specially created works. n.b.k. members can purchase both the book and the special editions at a special price.
