Oliver Ressler
Oliver Ressler (*1970 in Knittelfeld / Austria, lives and works in Vienna) is an artist, filmmaker, and activist who explores complex linkages between economics, politics, the environment, and social change. There is not a flag (2015/2022) is part of a photographic series showing images of Western European parliaments, covered with the flag of the respective country and annotated with a quote by the US historian and political scientist Howard Zinn: “No flag is big enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.” Formulated by Zinn in 1986 in response to the U.S. bombing of Tripoli in Libya, Ressler’s quote is placed in the context of current political events, particularly the European Union’s policies on migration and asylum. Ressler received the Swiss Art Prize Prix Thun for Art and Ethics in 2016; in 2002, he was awarded the International Media Art Prize of the ZKM Karlsruhe. He has shown his works in solo exhibitions worldwide, including at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2022); Cultural Centre of Belgrade (2020); Kunsthaus Graz (2019); Kunst Haus Wien (2018); The Agency Gallery, London (2018). His work has been included in over 400 international group exhibitions, including at Ludwig Museum, Budapest (2020); Videonale, Bonn (2019); Berliner Herbstsalon (2019); Museum Friedericianum, Kassel (2017); Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid (2014). Ressler’s work has also been shown at numerous biennials, including in Casablanca (2020); Gothenburg (2019), Kyiv (2017), Jeju / South Korea (2017), Helsinki (2014), Quebec (2014), Athens (2013, 2015), Venice (2013).
