Oliver Ressler: Everything‘s coming together while everything‘s falling apart: Venice Climate Camp
Tuesday, Jun 7, 2022 – Sunday, Jul 31, 2022
The video piece Everything’s coming together while everything’s falling apart: Venice Climate Camp was produced in conjunction with the Venice Climate Camp in September 2019, organized by the No Grandi Navi (Eng. No big ships) committee together with Fridays for Future and numerous activists from across Europe. Starting from the camp on the Lido, 300 climate activists invaded the grounds of the 76th Venice International Film Festival and occupied the red carpet for over nine hours. The presence of the international press on the day of the award ceremony was used to draw media attention to the concerns of the climate movement. Although the blockade was not directed against the festival itself, the activists sharply criticized the fact that the international media attention was not used during the film festival to also raise awareness for climate justice.
The film, which can be viewed on the n.b.k. website from June 7 to July 31, 2022, is part of the exhibition Barricading the Ice Sheets by Oliver Ressler at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (June 4 – July 31, 2022). Ressler’s film projects, installations, photographs, and drawings illuminate the mechanisms and potential of worldwide protests. The interdisciplinary research project Barricading the Ice Sheets (since 2019) chronicles the mobilizations of climate activists through their activities, gatherings, and working sessions and presents different approaches and methods for an artistic-activist practice. In his works, Ressler takes a stand on the problem of increasing carbon emissions and accompanies civil disobedience activities that illuminate the inseparability of environmental issues and sociopolitical as well as economic conditions.
