Marcel Odenbach (*1953 in Cologne, lives in Cologne and Berlin) studied architecture, art history, and semiotics at the Technische Hochschule Aachen / Germany. Odenbach was a professor of Media Art at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe / Germany and the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne and taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf / Germany until 2021. Odenbach co-founded the video production studio Alternativ Television (ATV) with Ulrike Rosenbach and Klaus vom Bruch in the 1970s. Odenbach uses found footage, archival material, and self-produced images to create narratively complex video works that are distinctive for their montage technique. The artist explores historical themes and the role of the subject in society, often combining them with images of himself.
