Barbara Kruger
Barbara Kruger is considered one of the foremost influential contemporary US-American artists. Since the mid-1970s, her focus has centered on addressing political and social issues from a feminist perspective, combined with a critical stance toward consumerism. Her distinctive approach to words and found images has resulted in an unique visual language. In her early collages and video works, as well as in site-specific installations, Kruger takes advertising messages and pushes consumer propaganda to the limits. Utilizing the accessibility of vernacular language, she produces statements and questions that invite an examination of entrenched thought patterns, beliefs, and feelings, such as: “I shop, therefore I am”; “Your body is a battleground”; or “We don’t need another hero”. Kruger conceived a new limited edition work for n.b.k. – a silk print referencing her wall piece Untitled (Hello/Goodbye), which can be seen at n.b.k. as a permanent installation.
Barbara Kruger (*1945 in Newark/New Jersey, lives and works in Los Angeles and New York) was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2005 and was honored with the Kaiserring from the city of Goslar in 2019. Her work has been shown internationally at venues including the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2022); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2022); Venice Biennale (2022); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2021); Art Institute of Chicago (2021); Museum of Art, Seoul (2019); National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (2016); The High Line, New York (2016); Modern Art Oxford (2014); Kunsthaus Bregenz (2013); Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2013); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2011).
